Thriller Practise

In our groups we had to film and edit a short practice thriller. Our task was to create a short peice of film containing a shot reverse shot, a match cut nd a few lines of dialouge. We also had to show our knowledge of using the 180-degree rule correctly.
As this was only the groups second practical task, i believe that the task went well, and that the quality of the film was good. We managed to use a good range of shots, including a long shot, extreme close up and a shot reverse shot. The use of the 180-degree rule, also helped us with the plot of our story as it hid what was inside the bag, which left the the audience with unanswered questions, making it thrilling. At the beginning we also used a close up of just the shoes and the bag, which makes the audience ask questions almost instantly.
The editing didnt go aswell as we expected as it was only our first try some of the match cuts and the different scenes did not fit, so we lost quiet alot of footage. Despite this we mamaged to get a few of the shots together and i feel that the end footage was quiet good.

A Thrilling Read

In this task we were told to create a short thriller clip from a person reading a newspaper. To me this task was tricky, because reading a newspaper isn't very thrilling at all. So we had to come up with a thrilling idea, which didn't take as long as we expected, shows what four concentrated minds can do.

In our short clip we included various shots, which I think is good because we got to explore different camera angles and create different atmospheres from those angles. There was a particular shot which included me and the second character, what happened in this scene is that the second character was staring at me and I didn’t notice it, the clothing of the character made this scene even better because it created a dark atmosphere, which is what we tried to create, with the added lighting it even made the atmosphere more tense. There were some shots which didn’t work, like the tracking shot of me there were some continuity errors in that scene and the one before that.

The continuity editing didn't work as well as we expected, there were certain scenes which we just couldn't edit to change or make more effective or even remove these errors, but overall it worked well. So i was very pleased with what we created, there are some tips to pick up from it which is a good thing it can allow us to improve on the next time we’re filming.

Thrilling Read + Pre Lim Thriller

Thrilling Read
Our task was to film someone reading a newspaper in a thrilling and exciting way. This act in itself isn't particularly thrilling; therefore we had to create an atmosphere of suspense and mystery through the choice of shot distance, choice of camera angle and movement of the camera.

We had to use a minimum of 12 shots in which to create this sense of mystery and suspense. We had to use Extreme close up, Point of view shot and an over the shoulder shot.

The camera work in our short film was to a good standard. The shot which i liked the most was the handheld camera shot. This is when we try to reinact a lift shaking. This clip was really good and effective as we added in special effects of the lights dimming and this create more tension of what going to happen when the lights come on.

A walking shot which we did, didn't really work as we was unable to do an successful match cut. This made it a bit messed up as we couldn't do it properly.

The editing of the film went well as most of our clips fitted together perfectly. The short film which we create did make sense as he whole plot of the film went well.

The mise en scene was an important part as our character didn't speak and it was all through the movement and the setting of the film. So this was an important part as it had to create the whole tension and effect of our thriller.
In our short film, we was able to create suspense in the ending. Leaving the audience questioning what had happen in the lift and what will happen next. The suspense was create with the way we filmed the film and planned it. Also with the camera movements and the effects we used also helped with the tension.
When filming we forget about the head rule - how much head space should be in a shot. We also forgot about the space rule about how much room should be in front and behind the person.
When making are real thriller we are going to use some of the handheld techniques which we learnt as it creates movement with the camera. Also, we would use the point of view shot and the over the shoulder shot.
I actually enjoyed this task as it was one of our first filming task in the year and we was able to create our own type of thriller, i found it very exciting and intresting.

Pre-Lim Thriller
Our task was to create a short clip using three particular shots types that where match cut, shot-reverse-shot and the correct knowledge of the 180 degrees rule. Also our clip had to involve two people having a conversation which each other.

This was our second practice task i think it all went very well. This clip worked particularly well as we all had a knowledge of the shots which were needed to be done.
Our group has grown alot from our first task to our second task as we know abit more about the camera and shots and are able to understand them abit more and how to film them the correct way. We have also learnt a new technique such as the 180 degree rule and we will have to keep this is mind when we our filming for our final film.
In our practise film the best shot i think which we used was the shot-reverse-shot as we could see each characters facial expression as they held a conversation. I also liked the match cut of when the character was at the door and then we see a shot from her coming in the door from the otherside this makes the audience able to see it from the other side and from inside the room.
The editing of the film when particular well but we had a few problems which was overcome easily and we knew not to make the mistakes again in the real thriller. The music we added to the short film was a good mix as it create the suspense feeling of the clip and let the audience wonder what is going to happen.
With the Mise en Scene there was a bit of a problem as we was using a classroom we didnt clear the other students bags and coats and you can see them in the film but when we do the real one we will make sure that are setting is tottaly clear the way we want it. Also we forgot about the head space rule of how much head space should be in the camera and this was an issue what we could not over come but will we certainly remember.
All in all it was a great day of filming and i really enjoyed it and had fun with my group with the editing.

Pre- lim Thriller

Pre lim Thriller

Our task for our pre lim thriller was to create a short clip of certain types of shots and rules, our clips had to have a match cut, shot reverse shot and follow the 180 degree rule, our clip also had to have two main characters having a conversation together.
This was our group second edit so i think that it went really well, as a group we all got along together and completed the task to the best of our ability.

This was our second practice task i think this went really well. This clip worked particularly well as we all had a knowledge of shots which were needed to be done. Our group has grown a lot from the first task to the second task. By doing this we learnt how to use the camera more and learn certain shots, we were also able to understand how to film them the correct way. O have also learnt a new technique such as the 180 degree rule and we would have to keep this in mind when we are actually filming the final one.
In the practice film the best shot that i think we used was the shot reverse shot which we could see each characters facial expression as they held a conversation. I also like the match cut of when the character was at the door and then we see a shot from her coming in the door from the other side this makes the audience able to see from the other side and from inside the room.
The editing of the film went really well but we had a few problems which we overcome easily. We knew when it came to the real thing we couldn't make the same mistakes. The music we added to the short film was a good mix as it created suspense and made the audience tense because they didn't know what was going to happen next.
With the mise- en -scene there was a bit of a problem this was because we was in a classroom and we didnt clear the other students bags and jackets. Next time in the film we would make sure to clear everything so it doesnt get in the way of the real one.  Also another problem that occured whilst making the short film was we forgot about the head space rule of how much head space should be in the camera and this was an issue what we could not over come but we will certainly remember.
Overall it was a superb day of filming and i really enjoyed it and had great fun with my group whilst editing.

Pre-Lim Thriller

Pre-Lim Thriller

Our task was to create a short clip consisting of certain types of shots and rules, our clips had to have a match cut, shot-reverse-shot and follow the 180-degree rule, our clip also had to have two characters engaged in a conversation together.

As this was only our group’s second edit, I felt that we grasped the task very well. The camera work to me was very good, we included different types of shots in a short clip, which I felt worked very well. The shots I thought that were the best the shot-reverse because it showed the seriousness of the characters faces, and really brought out the point we tried to convey when making our short clip. In addition, the medium long shot at the end showing the transaction between the two characters was good as well, because since you couldn’t see what was in the bag, this raises questions for the audience making them ask questions like what’s in the bag, is it that important that money had to be traded for it.

Our editing ended up pretty well; we did have some continuity errors, which we quickly got over with our great editing. However there where some continuity errors which we couldn’t evade, like the amount of space left over the characters head in the panning shot. The clip overall was very clear, it clearly shows what the whole point of the clip is, which as in exchange between two characters.

Well our mise en scene wasn’t of the best as you can see in our last scene there were students bags & coats left around the scene which didn’t really help us with what we were trying to bring out of the clip. So if there's anything I learned about mise en scene is that its best to clear the area before filming.

Yes I felt that we created an element of suspense with our music especially. When I watch the film with the music added to it creates a feeling that something’s going to happen, and to me I think it’s great that we added that audio to the clip.

The only thing we forgot was about the camera height rule, as we forgot to make sure that there's not so much space above the characters head.

A Thrilling Read

Thrilling Read

In this task we had to create a short thriller clip of a person reading a newspaper. This act wasn't thrilling at all therefore we had to create an atmosphere of  suspense and tension. As a group we had to create this by using a choice of camera angle, shots and movement.

We had to use a minimum of twelve shots in which to create the sense of mystery and suspense. We had to use extreme close up, point of view shot and an over the shoulder shot.

The camera work was really successful and we manage to create a good short clip.
In our short clip we included a good variety of shots. This is good because we got to explore different camera angles and use wide range of movement from these angles. The shot that everyone like the most was the handheld camera shot. We used it to make it look like the lift shaking which was good technique . This was because it was really effective and it worked really well, we used effects by dimming the lights. This made the audience question what is going to happen next and this is really creative because that is what we want them to think.
There were also some shots that didn't work which we didn't use, like the tracking shot of Efosa and the one before that. The continuity editing didn't work as well as we thought, there were certain scenes which came out so wrong we couldn't edit or change so we had to leave them out.

The editing of the film went really well as most of the clips fitted together. The short film that we created made a lot of sense and plot did to.
Throughout the whole clip the mise en scene was a very important part this was because the character didn't speak and it was all through the movement and setting of the film.

Overall the main purpose was to create suspense and tension. This was leaving the audience questioning what will happen next in the lift. I think as a group we managed to achieve this really well and came out with a good result at the end. I actually enjoyed this task this was because it was our first filming task and we had the chance to create our own thriller.
